KOKRAJHAR: The United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) has continued to hold public meetings in various districts outside BTC after the cabinet of Assam government decided to introduce a bill for Boro Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) soon for the socio-economic development of Boro people.

A public meeting was held on Sunday at Borkacharigaon in Nagaon district which was attended by UBPO leaders and chaired by president Mihiniswar Basumatary. In the meeting, Basumatary elaborated the achievement of the organization, latest development of the government of Assam planning to form the BKWAC as part of clauses of BTR accord and implementation of Boro language as an associate official language of the State. He opined the struggle of the UBPO for the formation of BKWAC for the community. He thanked the people who supported the movement for the new council and also thanked the government of Assam especially Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Cabinet Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for their great initiatives to bring the council into reality.

UBPO general secretary Anil Basumatary while talking to this correspondent said the much expectation of the Boro Kachari people living outside BTC will be fulfilled after the formation of BKWAC. He said the socio-economic development of Boro Kachari people, protection of language, culture and tradition, development of Bodo literature and medium would be possible after the formation of new council. He also hoped that the government of Assam will bring the BKWAC bill through an ordinance very soon.

Similar public meeting of UBPO was held on Saturday at Langhin Tiniali in Karbi Anglong. Before this, such meeting was also held at Jamguri LP School in Barpeta district and Bagpara and Baokabangi in Bongaigaon and Dhubri district respectively. There would be similar meeting at Guwahati on October 20, the sources said.
