United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) hails laying down of arms by NLFB

LAKHIMPUR: United Bodo People's Organization (UBPO) has hailed the coming back of NLFB (National Liberation Front of Bodoland) chief M Batha alias Binod Mushahary, president IB Bithoungoda and vice-president Boku Basumatary to the mainstream by laying down of arms along with 20 cadres of the outfit.

Notably, the 23 members of the NLFB, an extremist group formed five months ago in the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR), surrendered in Udalguri district's Lalpani on Thursday. The surrendered militants — including the outfit's chief M Batha— were received by the Bodoland Territorial Council chief Pramod Boro, State Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, Chief Minister's political advisor Jayanta Malla Baruah and Special DGP (Law and Order) GP Singh.

In this context, UBPO State president Manoranjan Basumatary and general secretary Pitambar Brahma, in a press communiqué, said that the extremist activities that continued for decades had affected the development of the Bodo community. "Due to such extremist activities, a number of promising Bodo youths had to make supreme sacrifice and a lot of them have turned decrepit forever," the UBPO president and the general secretary stated in the press communiqué.

Both dignitaries of the organization called upon the Union and State governments and all concerned to initiate effective steps to bring an end to the insurgency in the Bodo community.
