Upper Assam’s largest Baptist Church inaugurated

DIGBOI: Everything is staggering about the newly-dedicated Sumi Baptist Church at Lalpahar plateau at Tipong in Tinsukia district, supposed to be Upper Assam’s largest. The Sumi Baptist Church is about 80 feet tall with four storeys standing high on a plateau sharing proximity to the nearby coal mining zones in the village. It was formally dedicated during an inaugural ceremony held amidst a significant gathering of religious leaders, preachers and followers.

The church, which was erected at an estimated cost of around Rs 3 crore, was inaugurated recently by Rev. Dr Hevukhu Achumi, the Executive Secretary of Western Sumi Baptist Church Association (WSBAK) of Dimapur, in the presence of people from various walks of life. Community feast, cultural programmes and collective prayers marked the inaugural ceremony. “Starting with a meagre fund of around Rs 25 lakh in 2008, we gradually raised money through voluntary donations. Around 10 years of persistent efforts finally bore fruit and about 150 Sumi families in the village successfully dedicated a church for the brethren in Upper Assam,” said Jogdang Jugli, the secretary of the construction committee. “The church, with conference hall, two balconies and office rooms, can accommodate more than 1,500 people,” said the president of the construction committee, Khutoi Sema while addressing media persons after the inaugural ceremony.
