KOKRAJHAR: The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) alleged corruption to the tune of Rs 20 crore by former EM of the fishery department, Shyam Sundi during his tenure in the last five years.

Addressing media persons in the office of the UPPL at Kokrajhar on Wednesday, Kamal Azad, secretary, IT cell and in-charge of social media of the party, alleged that a sum of Rs 20 crore had been misappropriated by the fishery department in the last five years and this had been revealed through RTI documents.

He said that former EM of the fishery department, Shyam Sundi had approved many fishery development projects in Mazbat development block to his party workers. Preliminary investigation showed that these projects were executed in a proper way and had not been completed. Some projects were not found in the places for which they were approved, alleged Kamal Azad.

He said that in 2019-20, financial incentives were given to 32 beneficiaries for fish and fish seed trading but preliminary investigation showed that the beneficiaries of these incentives were not at all related to fishery. He also alleged that they were mostly party workers and leaders of student organizations. He said that a total of 34 beneficiaries who were rearing and farming fish in their tanks or ponds were supposed to get Rs 50,000 each as financial help but none of the genuine beneficiaries received the aid from the fishery department and all 34 beneficiaries who received the money were fake beneficiaries. He also said that they would submit the documents to the Governor and urge to him to take stern action against Shyam Sundi.
