KOKRAJHAR: A team of United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), under the leadership of Maoti Brahma Hazowary, general secretary; Pratibha Brahma, vice-president, and Jwmwi Wary, former MCLA, called on the Governor of Assam, Prof. Jagadish Mukhi during his second visit to Kokrajhar at the BTC Secretariat on Monday and requested the Governor to take immediate steps for promoting transparent and accountable government.

Assam Governor Mukhi has given the district administration 48 hours to arrest the main culprits who were involved in the barbaric attack on UPPL worker at Sekadani village under Kachugaon police station recently. An elderly person sustained ear injury in the attack.

Talking to mediapersons at the UPPL head office Mwiderkhoro in Kokrajhar, Maoti Brahma Hazowary and Pratibha Brahma said that the VCDC, TCLCC, municipal boards and town committees formed by the previous government led by BPF were involved in corruption in various schemes and alleged that they were still functioning as per the dictates of the party leadership.

"This has given an undue advantage to the BPF party before the BTC election. In addition, the inaction has boosted the morale of the corrupt individuals in the urban bodies," they said, adding that the grassroots-level governance through VCDC was currently at standstill. They urged to introduce a short-term governance mechanism to carry out developmental works in the COVID-19 situation.

Both leaders said that they demanded handing over the investigation of corruption cases of the previous government to CBI/SIT for quick investigation and to take appropriate legal action. They said that the transfer orders of bureaucrats, who have been working in the BTC Secretariat for years together against the service rules, had been stayed due to political interference. They urged the Governor to execute the pending transfer orders of the corrupt officials so that good governance could be implemented.
