GUWAHATI: The Assam Assembly had its share of pandemonium on Monday, March 24, after an attack was reportedly launched on Deputy Speaker Numal Momin by Congress MLA Nurul Huda just outside the Assembly.
This precipitated a fierce exchange of words between members of the ruling party and the opposition, resulting finally in the adjournment of the sitting.
The chaos started when Congress lawmakers came to the Assembly dressed in black as a sign of protest against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. Kurmi had reportedly abused opposition MLAs verbally and tried to physically attack them within the House last week. In retaliation, Congress leaders organized a sit-in protest outside the Speaker's chamber, calling for severe action against Kurmi.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma fanned flames by alleging that Momin had been hospitalized after being attacked by Huda. But just before Sarma's statement, Momin had been spotted inside the House participating in the session, calling into question the truth of the claims. Speaker Biswajit Daimary subsequently ordered officials to probe the issue to determine the facts.
The opposition, consisting of the Congress, AIUDF, and CPI(M), strongly protested against Kurmi’s actions and the ruling party’s allegations regarding Momin. The treasury benches, led by Sarma, countered with loud accusations, insisting that Momin, a tribal leader, had been assaulted by opposition members. The escalating chaos prompted the Speaker to adjourn the House for 10 minutes to restore order.
With tensions already at a high pitch, everyone now looks towards the result of the Speaker's investigation into the reported attack and the general matter of decorum within the Assembly.
