LAKHIMPUR: The 71st foundation day of the Village Defence Party (VDP) was observed at Dhakuakhana Police Station on Wednesday. The event began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and unfurling of the flag by OC Dibendra Barman. Dhakuakhana subdivision VDP president Krishna Kamal Borah conducted the Smriti tarpan event.

In connection with the event, a public meeting was organized with the Dhakuakhana subdivision VDP president in the chair. Taking part in the programme as a guest of honour, Dibendra Barman delivered an elaborate lecture on the history of VDP and its role in maintaining peace and ensuring security in the local vicinities. “The volunteers of the VDP deserve respect because of their dedicated services to the society despite being paid a very nominal amount as their remuneration. However, the government has increased the remuneration a little in order to relieve them,” he said in his speech. He laid stress on ushering in mutual understanding, coordination and unity between the police and VDP towards ensuring law and order across the subdivision.
