Veteran academician Prabhat Chandra Sarma passes away

Prabhat Chandra Sarma, a veteran academician, an exponent of Sankrit literature and a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi literary award for translation, passed away on Friday afternoon here at his Bamunpara residence due to old-age ailments. He was 95.

MANGALDAI: Prabhat Chandra Sarma, a veteran academician, an exponent of Sankrit literature and a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi literary award for translation, passed away on Friday afternoon here at his Bamunpara residence due to old-age ailments. He was 95.

He was selected for the Sahitya Akademi literary award in the year 2002 for his book Kadambari translated to Assamese from the original Sanskrit version of Banabhatta. He had also translated the Sanskrit book Panchatantra to Assamese. He edited the dictionary of Darrang titled Darrangi Sabda Kosh.

In the year 1990, he took retirement from his teaching job in the Sanskrit department of Mangaldai College. His death has been widely mourned in the greater Mangaldai area. He is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters along with a host of relatives and well wishers.
