Veteran educationist and journalist Guna Baruah passes away in Sivasagar

GAURISAGAR: Veteran journalist, State literary pensioner, former professor of Jhanji Hem Nath Sarmah College and Head of the Department of History, Guna Baruah breathed his last on Tuesday morning at his Sivasagar Melachakor residence due to prolonged illness. He was 80.

Born in 1940 at Rajabari Tea Estate, Baruah did his schooling from Selenghat LP School, Sivasagar Bidyapith and Sivasagar Government HS & MP School. He got IA from Sibsagar College and BA from St.Edmund's College, Shillong. He did his post-graduation from Gauhati University in History. Soon after his post-graduation in 1966, he joined Jhanji Hem Nath Sarmah College as part-time lecturer. Despite getting selected in 1986 as a lecturer of Sibsagar Girls' College, he devoted 36 years of service to Jhanji HNS College. He got superannuation on February 29, 2000. He started his journalism career from 1966 and was the local correspondent of a vernacular newspaper.

For his outstanding contribution in the field of journalism, he was honoured with the Kanak Chandra Sarmah Award. He held the post of general secretary of Sivasagar District Journalist Association (SDJA) for two terms. Besides, he took initiative in establishment of Sibsagar Commerce College and Sibsagar Girls' College.

People from various walks of life thronged his Sivasagar residence after news of his demise spread. Various organizations like Sivasagar Zila Sangbadik Santha, Sivasagar Press Club, Sivasagar Yuva Dol, Sibsagar Commerce College, Sibsagar Girls' College and Jhanji Hem Nath Sarmah College condoled his demise.
