Veteran journalist Prafulla Rajguru no more

JORHAT: Prominent educationist, journalist, social worker and columnist, Prafulla Rajguru passed away due to hip injury at a private hospital on Tuesday, said family sources. He was 82 and leaves behind his wife Kabita Rajguru, daughter Priyakshi Rajguru and a host of relatives and friends.

As the news of his demise spread, people from all walks of life rushed to his DCB College Road residence and paid their last respects to the departed soul. Prafulla Rajguru retired as the Head of the Department of English from DCB Girls’ College in 1997 and after his retirement he joined Amar Asom as executive editor of the Jorhat edition where he served till 2000. He was the founder president of Jorhat Press Club, chairman of Jonaki Sangha Vidyalaya management committee for 20 years till his demise. He authored four books and was member of several organizations like Axam Xahitya Xabha, and remained as adviser of Jorhat Press Club till his demise.

He was a close friend of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and former Union Minister Bijoy Krishna Handique. Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora, Koliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kamal Malla Bujarbaruah, All Assam Students’ Union publicity secretary Jul Khound and Jorhat Press Club president Niranjan Mahanta paid their last respects to the departed soul.

His body was taken to Devi Charan Baruah Girls’ College, Jorhat Press Club, Jonaki Sangha Vidyalaya and Axam Xahitya Xabha central office before leaving for the Tarajan crematorium where his last rites were performed in presence of a huge gathering. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Jorhat District Congress Committee, Bar Association and Lawyers’ Union have condoled his demise.
