Village Defence Organization foundation day celebrated in Darrang

MANGALDAI: Darrang Police and District Village Defence Organization, with a view to making the Village Defence Organization more effective, dynamic and disciplined, celebrated the 71st foundation day of the Village Defence Organization with a two-day programme at Da Bhui Kshetra at Holouchouka under Mangaldai Police Station on February 9 and February 10.

In view of the central celebration of the foundation day at Silchar, the district-level celebration was deferred to these two dates. “The Village Defence Organization is a voluntary organization based on the dedication and commitment of the cross-section of the society and except in Assam, no such organization can be found in the other States of our country. I appreciate the selfless service rendered by the members of this organization at the grassroots level during different crucial periods and this organization truly reflects the traditional unity of Assam,” said Deputy Inspector General of Police of Central Western Range, Brajenjit Singha while taking part in the inaugural day of the celebration. Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan inaugurated the volleyball competition in presence of sports organizer Chandra Sarma.

Earlier, both the circle organizers -Kushal Medhi and Mahesh Sarma- marked the beginning of the celebration with a cleanliness drive while deputy adviser of District Village Defence Organization, Mukut Saikia unfurled the flag of the organization. Additional Superintendent of Police Ujjwal Pratim Barua, while taking part in the programme, offered floral homage in memory of the founder of the organization, Hari Narayan Barua followed by tree plantation programme by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border) Anita Hazarika. On the second day, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Mamani Hazarika flagged off the marathon.

Synchronizing with the celebration, a medical and health camp was also organized with the participation of eminent medical officers of Narayana Super Speciality Hospital. It was inaugurated by officer-in-charge of Mangaldai Police Station, Inspector Niranjan Barua. In the open meeting, Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan, media person Bhargab Kumar Das, deputy adviser Mukut Saikia and president of Mangaldai Thana Committee, Dilip Dawka took part as the invited guests. Several members of the organization were offered felicitation for their performance. Members of a premier voluntary organization for blood donation -Unity We the Blood Donors- were accorded a rousing felicitation for their immense contribution to the society and for their role in creating awareness on blood donation. Significantly in the ‘Tug of War’ for women competition large numbers of rural housewives and girls took part with tremendous enthusiasm and spirit. In another attractive event ‘ climbing of oiled Banana pole’ competition though several smart youths took part Dhruba Deka made his way to the top of the Banana pole.
