We won't allow BJP and RSS to destroy Assam's culture, says Rahul Gandhi

Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lead a protest rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) at Veterinary Playground in Khanapara, Guwahati on Saturday. The event coincided with the 135th anniversary of Congress Foundation Day.

Gandhi spoke about his learning experiences in Assam and how he was influenced by the people and culture of the state.

He reiterated the importance of the Assam Accord which is significant in maintaining peace and order in the state. According to the Assam Accord of 1985, foreigners entering Assam, irrespective of their religion or language, after 24th of March 1971, do not qualify for citizenship. The Accord was the culmination point of the Assam Movement of Assam Agitation that saw the participation of people from all walks of life who wanted an "Infiltration Free Assam." The Accord signed between the central and state authorities called for 'detention, disenfranchisement and deportation' of all foreigners.

Gandhi said that the Modi government was not listening to the people of Assam. He added that the strength of Assam lies in brotherhood and cooperation.

Gandhi also spoke about the problem of unemployment in India and the state. He spoke about the economic slowdown in the country and accused Modi of warming up to the corporates.

Gandhi was presented with a gamocha, bouquet, shawl and a decorative rhino figurine native to the state of Assam. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, son of former CM of Assam Tarun Gogoi was also seen sharing the dais with Gandhi.
