TINSUKIA: A five-member team of volunteers from Durgapur in West Bengal set off from Tinsukia on Saturday with relief materials for flood-affected people in Sivasagar.
The team, led by Rajesh Sen, secretary of the government-registered Durgapur Adda Yuba Sangha (DAYA), was welcomed in Tinsukia by social workers Bidhan Das and Iswar Gupta. The other members of the team were Tapash Goswami, Debabrata Das, Debashish Badhyakar and Tuhin Chanda. Members of the West Bengal delegation said they decided to extend assistance after learning about the devastating floods in Assam and the difficulties faced by affected people in their aftermath. “We are bringing as much as we can. Our aim is to deliver some necessary relief to the flood victims and make them feel that they are not alone during this difficult time,” Rajesh Sen said.
Commenting on the initiative, Bidhan Das said the team had set an example of humanity, brotherhood and national unity.
He said the initiative demonstrated that when it comes to serving humanity, barriers of language, caste, religion and region could be overcome. He added that people from different parts of the country coming forward to help flood victims in Assam reflected the spirit of humanitarian solidarity.
Das described the efforts of the West Bengal team as an inspiring example of such humanitarian consciousness.
