Wild Rhino Stuck in a Bog in Mariani, Rescue Team on its Way

JORHAT: A wild rhinoceros managed to get itself stuck in a bog in the Mariani region of the state on Wednesday. A team of experts from Guwahati are now on the way to rescue the animal in distress.

Local people reported a rhinoceros roaming freely in the Nakchari Dehotiya village in the Mariani region of the Jorhat district. Later it managed to get itself stuck in a bog and found it unable to get out of it on its own. The wild rhinoceros had already triggered fear among the locals and they informed the local forest officials.

The officials who later arrived at the location also mentioned that a rhino was seen in the Hollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary which is located nearby and suspected that the same might have come out of the protected area in search of food. They also informed that a specialist team was on their way from Guwahati to tranquilise the animal and rescue it.

A full-grown rhino has not only faced its defeat in infighting with another rhino but met with the tragic end of his life. This incident has taken place in Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONPTR) in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The staff of ONPTR at Borkhe Anti Poaching Camp detected the carcass at about 9.25 am with its horn intact. Divisional Forest Officer of Mangaldai Wildlife Division Pradipta Barua immediately rushed to the spot and arranged for the post-mortem examination by the Veterinary Officer of the locality.

Mention may be made here that following the strict vigilance of the staff of the park, the ONPTR has been recording zero poaching since 2018. According to an estimate from February 2022, there are 125 one-horned rhinos in existence, according to the ONPTR.
