Who is Diban Deka? Who is the Assam Police official he is talking about involved in secret killings? Find out

Guwahati: Ex-BJP leader Diban Deka, one of the prime accused in the SI recruitment scam was on Thursday sent to 5-day police custody after he had "surrendered" and was taken into custody last night.

Amid all the raids and investigations, we take a look at few interesting things about Diban Deka.

Who is Diban Deka?

Diban Deka, a BJP youth leader was on Thursday expelled from the party's primary membership. Deka identified himself as the national executive of BJP's farmers' wing.

A former employee of the Saradha group—which was involved in a multi-crore deposit scam, Deka, had contested in the 2011 Assam Assembly election on a BJP ticket. He had contested from the Barkhetri constituency of Nalbari but lost. He claims to have been with the BJP for 24 years.

On his Facebook post of September 24, he wrote how he informed Pradeep Kumar, Chairman of SLPRB about the question paper leak and that he feared for his life and requested Assam Government to take care about the security of his family in his absence. He also mentioned about corrupt police officials who are involved in the entire question paper scam and that there is "an officer involved who has secretly killed many people".

A resident of Palacia Park in the Chachal area of the city, he studied at Guwahati Commerce College.

He is mostly known for his social work.

What is his role in the question paper leak?

Deka's name surfaced in one of the mock tests held at a private lodge (named Thank You) a day before the exams held on September 20. A now-arrested employee of the lodge had named Deka.

According reports, the question papers were printed in the printing press owned by him.

As he has mentioned in his Facebook post, he was involved with the company that was responsible for conducting the exams.

Why was he not arrested earlier when he was interrogated CID?

According to Assam Police officials, Deka was questioned by the CID after the scam had surfaced, but was allowed to go as there was "no circumstantial evidence against him". Shortly after, he went missing.

On September 24, however, he surfaced on Facebook to claim that his life was in danger.

Crime Branch had carried out operations at Krishna Apartment at Jatia in Guwahati in search of Deka who used to frequent this place as one of his close associates Rajib Bharali, lives at Krishna Apartment.

The Crime Branch also conducted search operation at the residence of Diban Deka at Palacia Park in the Chachal area of the city.

The search operations happened when he had gone missing.

Deka's Facebook post raises a few questions like was he referring to DIG (retd) P K Dutta another prime accused in the scam who is now on the run when he referred to corrupt Assam Police official who had even indulged in secret killings or is it someone other Assam Police official.

What is still not clear is why did he surrender in Patacharkuchi? Is the threat to his life, as claimed by him in the Facebook post no longer there?

Looks like more skeletons could tumble from the closet in the coming days as further interrogation and investigation takes place.

Definitely a lot at stake for the BJP Government as the countdown begins for Assembly Elections next year.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his office have taken personal interest to ensure that culprits do not go scot-free. The CID probe is underway. Pradeep Kumar, Chairman of SLPRB has already stepped down accepting moral responsibility and Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, DGP, Assam Police has taken over.

Assam Finance, Health, Education and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that the exams would be held on November 30 in the most fair manner.
