Why Did Teachers Create Ruckus at Teachers' Day Celebration Programme in Guwahati?

GUWAHATI: The Assam government, on Sunday, presented the state Teachers' Awards in a ceremony organized in Guwahati to mark the National Teachers' Day.

This year, the government presented Meritorious Teachers Awards to 36 teachers across the state.

However, a ruckus was created by the awardees in the programme which drew flak from various quarters. Some alleged that the teachers created the ruckus as they did not get a chance to take selfies with Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

However, refuting such allegations, a teacher from Lakhimpur who was also present in the ceremony to take the Award claimed that they did not create a ruckus for not getting a chance to take a selfie with the Education Minister. " I was also invited to receive the Award.

In our district's list, I was placed in the first position. But in the ceremony, I was not invited to receive the Award first. Besides, there was a spelling error in my name in the list," he said adding that the teachers were invited to receive their awards after the playing of the National Anthem in the meeting.

"We were invited to receive the awards after playing the National Anthem. We protested this as the playing of the National Anthem denotes the ending of a meeting, " he further said.

He also claimed that the organizer of the ceremony acknowledged their mistake.

On the other hand, teachers on Sunday staged State-wide protest demanding the cancel of Issue-Date to regularize their jobs and to resolve their long-pending issues. The Issue-Date victim teachers demonstrate the protest at various parts in Lakhimpur district too.

In this context, All Assam Issue Date Victim Upper Primary School Teachers' Association president Ashok Chetri and secretaries Mahajyoti Sarmah and Fazarul Haque said, "The present Chief Minister-cum-former Education Minister asserted in the teachers appointment letter distribution ceremony held in Guwahati on February 5 of the current year that the Issue Date Victim Schools would be provincialized by bringing them within the ambit of the Provincialisation Act concerned before the issue of Assam Assembly Election Notification. But the issue has still not been resolved, due to which many victim teachers among us are going to retire soon without getting a penny in the name of salary for their dedicated services".
