ORANG: In a horrifying incident that left the community in shock, a wild elephant wreaked havoc in No. 2 Bogaribari village under Mazbat police station, situated along the Assam-Arunachal border. The rampage, which occurred around 2:30 AM on Sunday, resulted in the death of a 42-year-old woman and left four others injured.

The deceased, Lawanya Boro, was asleep on the verandah of her home when the elephant attacked. Eyewitnesses report the elephant violently gored her, causing fatal internal injuries. In a miraculous escape, another woman from a neighbouring house managed to flee from under the elephant’s belly with her 4-month-old baby and another family member.

The elephant, suspected to have wandered from the forests of Arunachal Pradesh in search of food, has reportedly been a recurring threat in the area. During this latest incident, it damaged three homes before attacking the victims.

The injured identified as Rabiral Hembram (52 years), Laxmi Hembram (10 years), Mariam Soren (45 years), and Palton Hembram (12 years) have been admitted to TMCH for treatment and are said to be in a stable condition.

Forest department officials rushed to the site following the incident. The deceased’s body was sent to Udalguri Civil Hospital for autopsy with the help of Lalpani police.

Villagers have expressed growing concern over the increasing human-wildlife conflict in the area and urged the authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
