Wild Jumbos Trample One to Death in Udalguri District

TANGLA: The man-elephant conflict refuses to die down in the Indo-Bhutan border villages of the Udalguri district. In yet another incident, a youth in his late 20s, Shyam Nirola was trampled to death by a herd of wild jumbos after being chased in the wee hours near his residence in Tarajuli under Rowta Police Station in Udalguri district on Saturday morning.

According to reports, a herd of wild jumbos descending from the Indo-Bhutan hills has unleashed a reign of terror in the locality, forcing villagers to spend sleepless nights. “We never feel that there is a forest department to tackle the menace of elephants. Their personnel never patrol the villages,” decried Somraj Sonar, president of Udalguri chapter of All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU).

“How long will the government refrain itself from formulating policies to protect us,” said another local youth of Dimakuchi, Prem Bahadur Gautam.

According to official statistics, as many as six elephants and 22 humans have lost their lives due to the man-elephant conflict in the district in 2019 till date.
