Will Congress-led Mahajot obstruct the return of BJP alliance?

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR: This question is now making round in the political circles of poll bound Barak Valley in the wake of the formation of 5 party mahajote comprising Congress, AIUDF, CPM,CPI, CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Parishad. It is true after much dilly-dallying, AIUDF has been able to convince Congress unless a grand alliance of anti saffron parties is given concrete shape, they will have no face-shaving existence in the state. It is high time they bury their hatchet and form the alliance, knowing full well it makes no difference for the BJP and its ally AGP. Ajay Jamuwal, in charge of BJP in Assam, is confident to rule out any threat to upset the declared goal of 100 plus for the party. Rather, he predicted the tally near 126 in the forthcoming elections.

Jamuwal's prediction, no doubt, is hyperbolic and far-fetched. C-Voter in its pre poll survey has predicted the coming back of BJP alliance to power, giving full credit to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his clean image and deft handling of the affairs of the state, but put the victory score of 80 plus. Jamuwal in his emotional overdrive has even gone to say, "There is no party or power in Assam to challenge BJP."

If BJP leaders are confident of repeat victory, Grand Alliance leaders are equally over confident of obstructing its passage to the citadel of power at Dispur. An emboldened AIUDF Chief Badaruddin Ajmal within 24 hours of the formation of mahajote went hammer and tongue at his first public meeting at Gauripur, firing salvos after salvos at its bĂȘte-noir BJP, calling it communal and anti Muslim, holding it responsible for demolition of Babri masjid and its return again will be ominous as the very existence of Muslims will be at stake. The saffron party will dictate their day to day activities. AIUDF chief plays Muslim card just to provoke the sentiments and emotions of the minorities.

By playing Muslim card, Badaruddin Ajmal is rather helping consolidation of Hindus to strengthen the hands of BJP. Such rabid communal statements for political gains no more hold water for any party for Indian voters in urban and rural areas have grown much wisdom to understand the game plan. Congress, a partner of the Mahajote, knows it will have to be cautious in sharing platform with Ajmal brigade. Left parties which have lost their moorings in the state are in the grand alliance to keep the big partners in good humour. Anchalik Gana Parishad, the new entrant, has yet to show its prospect and potential and quite hard to say at this stage how it will help in upsetting the dream figure of BJP.

By and large and in the final reckoning, the last Bihar assembly election results have shown how RJD's tie up with Congress has adversely impacted Tejaswari's prospect of beating BJP to return to power. In 2021 polls, Congress and AIUDF might face reverses in their over enthusiasm to sail together just to be at the seat of power at Dispur. It is ultimately the voters who have the last say. It is better to leave aside speculations and wait for the day of judgement.
