Will never allow CAB to be passed in Parliament: AASU

LAKHIMPUR: Synchronizing with the agitation programmes declared by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the activists of the organization initiated massive protest programme against the same on Monday in Lakhimpur district.

Led by president Pranjit Gogoi and and Punamjyoti Burhagohain, the members of the North Lakhimpur regional unit of AASU took out a bike rally opposing the controversial Bill. Spearheaded by Lakhimpur district body AASU president Pulok Jyoti Borah and general secretary Dhanmoni Dutta, the protesters reiterated that the communal Bill which was against the democratic temperament and ideals of the Constitution of India, violated the Assam Accord and was a tremendous threat to the existence of Assam, the Assamese community, language and culture. It would never be allowed to be passed in the Parliament.

Taking out the rally from the Swahid Bhavan campus of North Lakhimpur town, over 200 activists of the organization campaigned against the Bill by visiting the rural areas and appealed to the people to oppose the Bill unanimously. During the rally, the protesters shouted various slogans against the Bill, BJP-led Union and State governments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding their attitude in support of the Bill.

Further, the organization also slammed Asom Gana Parishad leaders Atul Borah and Keshab Mahanta . “If they don’t oppose the CAB for the greater interest of Assam and Assamese community, our organization will not hesitate to declare them traitors in future,” declared the leaders of the organization.

The Naoboicha and Ghilamora regional units of Lakhimpur AASU staged similar agitation programme against the Bill on Monday. On the other hand, the other 13 regional units initiated the protest from November 29 in their respective jurisdiction.
