GUWAHATI: In a bizarre incident, a woman has feigned pregnant to protect and save herself from the tortures of her mother-in-law in Assam's Mangaldai.

The incident has come to light after the woman claimed to give birth to a twin baby in Mangaldai civil hospital.

The woman who faked pregnancy also alleged that her newborns went missing from the hospital which compelled the police to launch an investigation.

However, in the police investigation, it has come to light that the woman feigned as pregnant. The woman also confessed that she feigned as pregnant to protect her from the tortures of her mother-in-law.

" My mother-in-law often threatened me that she would not permit me to stay in the home if I could not conceive. So, I feigned as pregnant and informed my husband that I gave birth to a twin baby," she claimed.

The woman used some clothes to feign as pregnant. The investigating police found no information that she was admitted to the Mangaldai civil hospital.

Notably, the government of India has launched a helpline number - SAKHI/181 (toll-free). SAKHI – OSC (one-stop centre) gives temporary shelter to women in distress in crises. It provides the public interface of 181 WHL (Women Help Line) at the district level.

It can extend administrative, legal and treatment help, besides psychological counselling. Sakhi is under the Department of Social Welfare.
