JORHAT:  As crimes against women continue to surge amid this pandemic across India, in a horrific incident, a woman hailing from Jorhat in Assam was raped by two men while she was returning back to her home on Monday night.

The two accused have been identified as Nagen Saikia (25) and Arup Jyoti Kalita (22). Accused Nagen Saikia is a resident of Ajanta bypass and Arup Jyoti Kalita is a resident of Malow Ali.

According to reports, the incident took place under a shed of Amar Haat, a daily fish and vegetable market in the Tarajan area along the Assam-Trunk Road in the Jorhat town when two rickshaw pullers allegedly raped a woman late on Monday night.

Police sources said that on Monday night at about 8:35 PM, information was received that one woman had been raped and left abandoned at the marketplace of the Amar Haat area.

The police said, "A team of police officials led by SI Indumoni Gogoi immediately left for the crime scene and rescued the victim. The victim who was found with her clothes torn was immediately sent to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital for medical checkup."

"The victim works in a restaurant in Jorhat town," added the police.

A case (No 1303/2021) has been registered at Jorhat police station under section 376 IPC and both the accused have been booked by the police.

On the other hand, the Jorhat district unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Tuesday morning took out a protest rally against the alleged rape of a woman demanding immediate and strict punishment to the two accused and slogan for justice to the woman was heard on the streets of Jorhat from the Student body.

Earlier in the month of May, a woman hailing from Assam's Charaideo district was raped by two men while she was returning back from the hospital with her daughter.

According to reports, the incident took place when the victim was returning home from the hospital after tested negative for COVID-19.

Unbale to arrange transport due to the ongoing curfew, the victim was forced to walk back home.

While heading back home, the woman and daughter were chased by two men in the Dhudarai area at around 7 PM and managed to take her to a nearby tea garden and raped her, however, the daughter somehow managed to run away and later informed nearby villagers who found the woman in a critical condition.
