Women Commission members stress education among women of tea gardens

DIBRUGARH: Chairperson of National Women Commission, Rekha Sharma, along with State Women Commission chairperson Dr Hemaprova Borthakur, on Wednesday held a discussion at the Circuit House with the Deputy Commissioner, Biswajit Pegu and Superintendent of Police Sewattank Mishra and other senior officials of the district civil and police administration.

Prior to the meeting, National Women Commission chairperson Rekha Sarmah and other members of the State Women Commission visited nearby tea estates of Jamira and Muncotta tea estate and on the spot reviewed the existing condition of the women laborers of the tea estates. In presence of the DC and the SP, the members of the women commission had an interaction with management of the tea estates and enquired about the facilities that were provided to pregnant mothers and steps taken for child education.

State Women Commission chairperson Dr Hema Prova Borthakur later told media persons about the importance of education in today's world and hence stressed pursuing several awareness programmes among the women of the tea estates.

"Educated mothers can inspire other mothers towards education," Borthakur said. She further said, "We have failed to secure the rights of women despite the Indian Constitution ensuring the same.

The government has taken up several steps for the self-reliance of women and we are sincerely trying to implement these for the welfare of women."
