SILCHAR: It was the close watch and surveillance of Lakhipur and Jirighat police of Lakhipur sub division of Cachar as well as their intelligence network that helped them nab two female drug peddlers in the morning of Sunday. Their predestined route to smuggle out the drugs through Sonai and Lakhipur road to deliver them to the prospective buyers was on the net of the police. Sub divisional police officer Anurag Sharma accordingly along with the police team of Jirighat and Lakhipur police stations was ready for interception and ambushes.

The police team also kept a hawked eye on the infamous NH 7, known for ferrying of contraband goods from Myanmar via Manipur to reach them different places of Barak Valley and beyond. Owing to lockdown and restrictions in movement of vehicles, smuggling has mostly been contained. Still, the daredevils prefer jail than give up the easy way to get flush money. The long wait and chase of police team ultimately spotted two women under the Barak bridge near Binnakandie Ghat not far from Lakhipur town with 13 soap cases, containing heroin weighing 155 grams in all.

The peddlers were taken into custody and the heroin seized whose market value 15.17 lakhs. The apprehended smugglers have been identified as Purnima Singh (54) and Benu Devi (52), both are from two different villages of Binnakandie part 1 and Dolugram under Lakhipur police station. Seizure was done on the spot as per legal procedures and the quantity and quantum were recorded. A case has been registered against both of them vide Lakhipur police case no. 234/2020 u/s 21 (b)/29 NDPS Act. According to preliminary cross-examination, they do not seem to be professional peddlers, but trying their fortune building through links. Next day, Purnima Singh and Benu Devi were produced before SDJM Court of Lakhipur which sent him to jail.
