Work on 18km bridge connecting Assam with Meghalaya to begin soon

Shillong: It will be the longest bridge in India, said DoNER (Development of North Eastern Region) Ministry in a tweet.

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma retweeted the post saying that the bridge will help to boost transport connectivity in Meghalaya.

The DoNER Ministry said that the infrastructure sector heavyweight, Larson & Toubro Construction has emerged to be the lowest bidder for the construction of the 18-km-long strategic bridge at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore.

The bridge will be a four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra river on the National Highway 127 B from Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari in Meghalaya.

It would reduce the distance between Assam and Meghalaya by about 203 km, the DoNER Ministry said.

Dr Bhupen Hazarika Setu, also known as Dhola Sadiya bridge over Lohit River in Assam's Tinsukia district, is currently the longest river in India.

This 9.15 km-long bridge connects Assam with Arunachal Pradesh, was inaugurated on May 26, 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
