Workshop on Agri-horticulture Cultivation Organized

MANGALDAI: “It is better to light a candle than to blame the darkness.” With this motto, around 75 youths, including housewives and girls of Darrang district, have taken a pledge to get involved in the production of agri-horticultural products in the district. The members of Mangaldai Media Circle, an organization of media persons in Mangaldai, organized a day-long workshop on the involvement of youths in agri-horticulture produce in collaboration with the district administration and district agriculture department at the conference hall of the Youth Club on Wednesday. Significantly, the workshop was organized on the basis of a Facebook post of a media person and many youths expressed their willingness to attend the workshop through this post.

“It is very heartening to see the participation of a large number of youths, including housewives, and this is definitely a humble beginning of a new venture,” said Darrang Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman while inaugurating the workshop. He advised the participants not to run after bank loan at the initial stage. “The soil of Darrang district is very fertile and suitable for agro-horticulture produce. The administration and the agriculture department will extend all assistance in starting agro-horticultural cultivation,” said the Deputy Commissioner. He suggested the youths to concentrate on the cultivation of lime, Assam lemon, common chilly and Bhoot Jolokia. He also offered the sapling of high-quality litchi and lemon to all the participants.

Retired Additional Director of Industries, Prafulla Kumar Saikia, Subdivisional Agriculture Officer Iftekhar Ahmed Nuri and Subdivisional Agriculture Officer (Agri Information) Dr. Uddhab Chandra Deka took part in the workshop as the resource persons in presence of District Agriculture Officer Nila Kanta Deka. In the second half of the workshop, all the participants were taken for a field study trip to the organic cultivation of farmer Habib Rahman at Kharupetia.
