GUWAHATI: A two-day workshop on Brajawali got underway on Sunday at the Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra here. Organized by the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS) and Parampara Pravah, the workshop was inaugurated by Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, the Education Adviser to the Government of Assam. Mahanta said that the study of Brajawali is very important in order to understand Srimanta Sankaradeva. He stressed on the increased popularity of Ankiya plays in Brajawali, stated a press release.

The inaugural session was anchored by Dr Mallika Kandali, director of Parampara Pravah and vice president of SSS and the purpose of the workshop was explained by Mridu Moucham Bora, secretary of Society for Srimanta Sankaradev. Dr Sanjib Kumar Borkakoti, president of the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva said that Brajawali is not an artificial language . He further said that the modern Hindi language had emanated from the Brajawali language used by Srimanta Sankaradeva in the Ankiya plays. Utpal Baruah, president of Parampara Pravah, also spoke a few words. Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, former general secretary of Axam Xahitya Xabha, was the first resource person . He dwelt on the history of the Brajawali language in details and traced its genesis to the Magadhi Avahattha language.
