DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Vigyan Kendra, which is always working for the betterment of the district's farming community, organised a day-long workshop on the issue of sustainable soil health management at No. 2 Kenduguri under Tinkhong development block under the direction of the kendra's senior scientist and head, Dr Diganta Sharma.

The programme was logistically supported by ATARI Guwahati office of ICAR New Delhi and Assam Agricultural University Jorhat. It was graced by several scientist of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Dibrugarh namely Hemchandra Saikia and Chayanika Thakuria and programme assistants Dr Sangita Bora Saikia and KB Chetri. Chayanika Thakuria, Subject Matter Specialist in Agronomy while welcoming the participants farmers mentioned the objective of the programme.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Hemchandra Saikia, a specialist in Agricultural Economics and Farm Management of the kendra informed the participant farmers that due to the critical role played by soil and ongoing degradation of soil, World Soil Day has been celebrated internationally since 2014 due to the initiative of United Nations General Assembly. Its main aim is to educate the people across the world about the importance of maintaining sound soil health and stop or minimize the process of soil degradation of varied types created mostly by manmade injudicious activities.

S Saikia cited that according to the FAO reports, 95% of food comes from soil and out of the 18 essential elements for plants, 15 elements are supplied by soil. Same agency reports that 33 % of soil across the world are degraded due to various factors. As soil degradation aggravate, the process of reduction of soil fertility, physical properties, destroy soil microorganisms or biodiversity etc, which ultimately affects the very state of food security of mankind across the world.
