JAMUGURIHAT: A one day workshop on ‘Translation Studies’ was organized at Tyagbir Hem Baruah College, Jamugurihat by the department of English on Thursday.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Ajit Hazarika, Principal of the college. Addressing the students, Dr Hazarika said that creative talent and skills in translation, especially into English, may help students explore newer avenues of employment in the present context. He called upon all to be studious and develop the skill of translation for translating the great masterpieces in Assamese into English.

Dr Sanjib Upadhyaya, recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award for translation 2021, acted as the resource person and discussed at length about his experience of translating two important literary compositions, The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway and Pita Putra by Homen Borgohain into Nepali. He referred to various principles that a translator has to keep in mind for doing justice to a text. He said that students should learn their own languages with respect along with other more extensively used languages like English for giving the world the taste of the best literary achievements in their own languages. They can also enrich their own languages by translating the gems of world literature into the vernacular languages.

After his deliberation, Dr Upadhyaya answered the questions asked by the participating students and a few selected texts in the vernacular languages were translated into English by the students in groups.
