World Environment Day celebrated in various parts of state

With the rest of the country, the World Environment Day was observed in Baksa district. The day was organised by Baksa District Water and Sanitation committee in support of Silkijhar Amartal village Development committee at Tarun Ram phukan ME School at Silkijhar village in the district of Baksa.

In this connection, a cleanliness drive, plantation programme and a slogan writing competition among the students on Swachh Bharat Mission was conducted in the school campus. Manash Bora, Goreswar circle officer along with Dr. Pritam Hazarika, in charge of Goreswar Veterinery Dispensary, Jogendra Nath Das, founder president of the school, Retired teacher Lalit Das and many others took part in the programme.

Ram Mohan Mallik , president of school managing committee presided over a prize distribution meet which was held in the school and prizes were distributed among the students. The circle officer, Manash Bora delivered his speech on the theme of World Environment Day 2023. Dr. Pritam Hazarika spoke on solid and liquid waste management for better visual cleanliness in the villages.

SIVASAGAR: ‘Sanmilita Sewa, Sivasagar’, a voluntary organization established on May 7 this year at the Boarding Field in Sivasagar with the aim of promoting and preserving Assamese culture, observed World Environment Day at the Sivasagar Government MV School premises on Monday.

A plantation programme was organized on the premises of the school in presence of teachers and students, including Illora Barua, headmistress of the school.

Prior to the event, general secretary of Sanmilita Sewa Sarat Hazarika briefed the aims and objectives of the organization and thanked the teachers and students of the school for their cooperation in the programme.

After this, Dr Utpal Dutta, president of the Sanmilita Sewa and professor of Botany, explained the significance of World Environment Day and informed about the severity of pollution caused by plastic.

He also informed the students that the earth could be saved from pollution only by avoiding or systematically reducing the use of polluting substances and planting trees and their proper nurturing.

The event was also attended by senior journalist Somesh Deka, advisor of Sanmilita Sewa Dr PP Chetia, Pradip Khandelia, Ramesh Bhattar, Anang Mohan Sharma, Bipul Chila Ojha, Akhil Saikia and the office-bearers of the organization who also planted seedlings if fruits and medicinal plants in the school premises.

GOLAGHAT: Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) organized the World Environment Day by planting 10 thousand saplings on Monday at Bogidhola Muga VGR, Sumoni in Golaghat district.

NRL observed World Environment Day in association with Sericulture Department, Golaghat, Block Development Office, Morangi, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Khumtai, Marangi Mahavidyalaya, and Letekujan Gaon Panchayat.

The mass plantation drive was inaugurated by the minister of Sericulture Department UG Brahma. In the programme, Sarupathar MLA Biswajit Phukan, managing director of NRL Bhaskarjyoti Phukan, Chief General Manager (CSR), NRL Mintu Handique, departmental officials took part.

TEZPUR: World Environment Day was celebrated at Tezpur Bengali Boys HS School under the aegis of “Innovative and Community Hub” of the school in collaboration with the Department of Geography, Darrang College and Maruwari Yuva Mancha. The day was flagged off by felicitation of invited guests by the principal of the school Swapan Kumar Sarkar and plantation of saplings in the school campus. Eminent educationist Dr Lakshmi Roy and Niha Dutta of the Geography Department of Darrang College, Tezpur spoke extensively on various environment-related issues. They requested all present in the event to make people aware about the environment and plant more trees to purify the air. Around 70 students of various institutions including Darrang College participated in the open quiz competition conducted by Chandra Sekhar Saikia, (vice principal) and nodal teachers of the hub Hiranya Borah and Ashim Saikia.

Project Vartak also recognised the importance of the day and contributed by organising a tree plantation drive led by Brig Raman Kumar SV, Chief Engineer and officers of all ranks of Project Vartak. Officers of all ranks also took a pledge to save environment and ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The Chief Engineer also visited “Darpan”, old age home, at Tezpur and interacted with the elders and enquired about their health and well-being.

TINSUKIA: The Tinsukia district administration observed the World Environment Day at different places with diversified activities across the district. The programme was centrally observed at Marut Nandan Kanan in Na-Pukhuri with the inauguration of renovated park by Sanjoy Kishan, Minister for Labour in presence of Deputy Commissioner Swapneel Paul, DDC Sushanta Dutta, TMB Chairman Pabitra Gogoi, TDA Chairman Kajal Gohain and other dignitaries. The renovation of Marut Nandan Kanan was completed with the fund allotted under Amrut 2.0 scheme and 15th finance commission of Assam Government.

On the occasion, a spot drawing competition was held among the school children on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The Prayash Sanskritic Gosthi also staged a street drama on plastic pollution. The street dramas were also held at Digboi, Sadiya, Doomdooma and Thana Chariali Tinsukia. Besides, plantation programme at the respective educational institutions, the World Environment Day programme was also held at BRMGMC, PNGBGMC, Digboi College, Tinsukia College, government offices, Anganwadi centres, Civil Defence, Pinewood Residential School, Hapjan Institute of Nursing and Paramedical Sciences, Aryabhatta Science Centre Itakhuli Block etc.

KOKRAJHAR: National Service Scheme (NSS), CIT, Kokrajhar observed the World Environment Day with full of enthusiasm. NSS of CIT has taken the opportunity to ignite the minds of the people with an aim to create a sustainable world. In the line to this year theme of Environment Day, “Beat Plastic Pollution” NSS CIT, Kokrajhar took pledge to plant more saplings first in the campus then in its surrounding and in the adopted villages. More than 150 saplings were planted in and around the CIT Campus. In order to make the sapling grow and to protect from animals, iron fencing were arranged for the sapling which were planted outside the campus.

LAKHIMPUR: World Environment Day was observed across Lakhimpur district on Monday. In this connection, Lakhimpur district administration initiated an extensive plantation drive at Rajgarh-Bengali village under Ujjalpur Gaon Panchayat in association with Forest Department of the district. This year the theme of the World Environment has focused on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution, as a reminder that people’s actions on plastic pollution matters.

The plantation drive at Rajgarh-Bengali was inaugurated by DC Sumit Sattawan. During this initiative, a total of 1000 saplings of valuable trees were planted with the active participation of DDC Utpal Borah, Divisional Forest Officer, CEO of Lakhimpur Zila Parishad, BDO of North Lakhimpur Development Block, students, local public.

On the other hand, the plantation drive initiated at Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital campus was inaugurated by Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka in the presence of DC, Additional Deputy Commissioners, District Development Commissioner, departmental heads of the district, teachers and students of St. Mary’s High School, students and faculties of the LMCH. In addition to them, street plays were staged at North Lakhimpur, Bihpuria, Narayanpur, Dhakuakhana under the aegis of Forest Department and in association with Cultural Affair and Lakhimpur district administration to make awareness on ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. The street plays were staged by theatre group Rangabhumi of Narayanpurand Natya Bidyalay of Dhakuakhana.
