HAILAKANDI: Along with the rest of Assam, World Environment Day was observed across Hailakandi district on Friday. Annually observed on June 5, World Environment Day stresses on the importance of everyone's active participation in environment conservation and sustainable living. The theme of this year is 'Celebrating Biodiversity'. With one million species facing extinction, there has never been a more opportune time to focus on biodiversity.

The ceremonial programme here kicked off in front of SS College in Hailakandi town with Deputy Commissioner, Megh Nidhi Dahal planting saplings and urging everyone to conserve biodiversity by protecting the flora and fauna. Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath, senior officials of the administration, BJP district office bearers and other dignitaries planted saplings on the occasion.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner, Dahal planted saplings in his office campus along with District Development Commissioner, Vikram Dev Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioners RK Dam and EL Faihraem and other office employees. Plantation of saplings was carried out in offices of DIPRO, DTO, Lala Municipal Board, DFO, Water Resources department and other establishments across the district.

JAGUN: World Environment Day was also observed at Jagun in Tinsukia district on Friday. The sapling plantation programme was undertaken at places under the initiatives of the president of Jagun Gaon panchayat Deepak Gautam. Biju Das, the incharge of Jagun Police Outpost also took part in the plantation programme. Das during the event reiterated the objectives and significance of the day. According to him, the very survival of humamity has a direct bearing with the nature. Meanwhile, Gautam urged people to rebuild the lost green cover and emphasize the importance of trees in society. "We must plant as much saplings as possible in our everyday life without waiting for any specific occasion to do so," said the president of the GP.

KALAIGAON: The Madhya Bhehguri Anganawadi Centre under Kalaigaon ICDS observed World Environment Day on Friday. On the occasion, Aruna Sarma, in charge worker of Madhya Bhehguri, AWC, planted saplings on roadside at Bhehguri along with her students. A sapling plantation programme was also carried out by Darrang District Youth Congress in the campus of Rajapukhuri Bagicha Anganawadi Centre. Humayan Kabir, president of Darrang District Youth Congress inaugurated the programme by planting the first sapling on Friday. While addressing the people, Kabir said that only plantation would not serve the purpose, proper care should be taken of these saplings. He also urged the people to plant saplings in every corner of their native villages.

Tezpur: A plantation drive was organized jointly by Assam State Forest Department and Indian Army troops in Missamari Military Station on the occasion of World Environment Day. Approx 1.2 lac saplings of 125 different species are planned to be planted over a span of 3 months. The effort has been augmented by active participation from locals and Ecological Territorial Army Battalion. The plantation drive aims at creating awareness about the much needed conservation of Eco system and addressing climate change, stated a press release.

DEMOW: Along with the rest of the State, Demow also observed World Environment Day on Friday. Under the patronage of Saragua VDP Party in Association with Sivasagar Tourist Guide Association, the World Environment Day was observed in Panidehing Bird Sanctuary in Upper Assam of Sivasagar District on Friday. On the occasion, the Aamara saplings and Dillenia Indica (Chulta) saplings were planted by the members of Saragua VDP Party and Sivasagar Tourist Guide Association in Panidehing Bird Sanctuary. In the programme members of Saragua VDP Party, Sivasagar Tourist Guide Association and mediapersons of Demow were present. On the other hand the Demow Model Hospital situated in Konwar Dihingia also observed the World Environment Day in the hospital premises. On the occasion an awareness meeting was organized among the people.

Haflong: With the theme 'Biodiversity' the World Environment Day was observed throughout the district of Dima Hasao in a befitting manner on Friday. At Haflong the day was celebrated with the plantation of fruit bearing trees at Sambhudhan Phonglo children Park by prominent persons like Member of Autonomous Council Nojit Kemprai, Deputy Commissioner, Paul Barua, Principal Secretary Amitabh Rajkhowa, Chief Conservator of Forest, M Tungnung, IFS, DFO Ramen Das, RO Peter Sumer and senior most journalist Anup Biswas along with others.

The newly formed Haflong Welfare Association celebrating the day planted and adopted five plants in front State Bank of India, Fishery Lake side and in front the office of Haflong Traffic police.

MAC Nojit Kemprai said, "People of Dima Hasao are aware of environment and forest. Nowadays they are found to be very much interested for plantation and protection of environment which is really a matter of encouragement." CCF Tungnung appreciated the people for showing interest in the cause of environment and appealed to support the aims and objective of the forest department in conservation.

Numaligarh: World Environment Day was observed in newly added Bandardubi area of Kaziranga on Friday. The programme was hosted by the Kaziranga National Park authority and Koliabor Sub-divisional administration. The Water Resources Minister of the State Keshab Mahanta participated in the programme and also planted tree saplings. During his speech Minister Keshab Mahanta advised the Kaziranga National Park authority to adopt schemes for emphasizing the co-existence of man and animal. He also said that the bio-diversity and the eco-system needs to be at the optimum level so that the planet earth and its environment remains habitable for all the living beings. Kaziranga National Park Director- P. Shivakumar, SDO (C) of Koliabor- Bitupon Neog, SDPO of Koliabor- Mrinmoy Das, DFO of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division- Ramesh Kr. Gogoi and Honorary Wildlife Warden - Uttam Saikia were present in the programme. Minister Keshab Mahanta also distributed tree saplings to students and locals of the area. He urged everyone to spare some time for our environment.
