SIVASAGAR: The Department of English and the Department of Assamese in collaboration with IQAC of the Historic Gargaon college of Sivasagar district conducted a bilingual (Assamese/ English) self-composed recitation competition among the students on the occasion of World Poetry Day recently. The programme was inaugurated by Dr Pabon Gogoi, Head and Associated professor of the Department of Political Science who enlightened the gathering on his insights on poetry and he also mesmerised the students with a beautiful recitation of one his self-composed poem “Jibonor Rong”. Rajib Gogoi, Head and Associate professor of the department of English also put forwarded his views on the etymology and significance of the Word Poetry Day. Gogoi also inspired the students and teachers to take up their pens and let their emotions overflow and practice composing poetry during their spare time. Dr Jitu Saikia, Assistant professor, Department of English and Pranab Duwarah, Assistant professor Department of Assamese took the chair of Judges and conducted the programme.

In the Assamese category of self-composed poetry recitation category, Mondeep Gogoi got the first position followed by Apurba Saikia and Gargi Duwarah in second and third positions respectively. In the English category of self-composed poetry recitation category Dwipandita Borpatragohain secured the first position, Sukanya Duwarah and Porikhit Lahon got the second and Apurba Saikia got the third position. Before the culmination of the event the faculty members of the college Dr Dwijen Nath, Priyama Dehingia, Nilakshi Chetia, Dr Jitu Saikia, Janardan Chetia, Devajani Bakalial and Dr Shyamalima Saikia also amused the gathering with their self-composed poetry recitation.
