World Tuberculosis (TB) Day observed in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: Along with the rest of the globe, World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was observed in Lakhimpur district too in order to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing this disease.

The event was first celebrated on March 24, 1982, on the 100th anniversary of Dr. Robert Koch's presentation. This year the theme of World TB Day is - 'Invest to End TB. Save Lives.'

In the district, the event was observed under the auspices of the District NTEP in association with Indian Medical Council (IMA), North Lakhimpur Branch. The agenda of the programme kicked off with an awareness rally which was taken out in North Lakhimpur town with the participation of Health Department officers, employees and health workers. The rally was flagged off by Dr. Manoj Kumar Das, the Joint Director of District Health Services (DHS). It was followed by a public awareness meeting held in the conference hall of the DHS office under the management of District TB and AIDS Control Officer Dr. Jagadish Goswami and health official Pankaj Sabhapandit.

Dr. Goswami explained the objective of the programme and highlighted the causes of TB, treatment system and the programmes of the DHS implemented to eliminate TB. IMA, North Lakhimpur Branch president Dr. Upendra Nath Dutta inaugurated the awareness meeting wherein ADC (Health) Geetali Duworah was present as chief guest. The chief guest appealed to all to exert united effort to eliminate TB from the district.
