World Wildlife Day Celebrated

Dibrugarh: A talk on wildlife conservation was organized at Dibrugarh Bengali High School on the occasion of World Wildlife Day on Thursday. Awareness about various acts for wildlife protection and breaking myths related to medicinal value of rhino horn, oil made up fats extracted from dolphin were discussed during the talk.

Speaking in the programme, Parthankar Choudhury, professor and former head of the Department of Ecology and Environment Sciences, Assam University said, "Conservation of wildlife is necessary for prevention of drought, new deserts, fires as well as floods. The students should come up and protect the environment."

He said, "There is no medicinal value of rhino horn. The wildlife smugglers spread false news to sell the animal parts. In the recent past, many rhinos were killed by poachers for their horns. People should understand that there is no medicinal value of rhino horn."

"The indigenous community of Assam believed that the oil which was extracted from river dolphins can cure rheumatism, nervous disorders, and asthma and is also believed to be an aphrodisiac. But it has no scientific reason. The river dolphin was poached for many reasons," Choudhury further said. Altogether, 150 students participated in the lecture along with teachers. Professor Shyama Prasad Biswas was also present at the event.
