Yoga Awareness camps to reach unreached districts of Assam

Guwahati: The science of yoga is being taken to the unreached-remote areas of 10 districts of the State through the celebrations of the 13th Assam Yoga Mahotsava 2019-20. Dibyajyoti Deka, organising secretary, 13th Assam Yoga Mahotsava Celebrations Committee stated that Mohanta Swami Sivnathji, Temple president, Nath Yogi Ashram, Odisha, as the chief guest inaugurated the opening ceremony of the month-long yoga festival at Bhogeswari Phookan Indoor Stadium, Dispur, on Sunday.

Dr. RN Nagendraji, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Anusandhan University, Bangalore, who is happened to be the yoga consultant of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was awarded the prestigious Sivananda Yoga Prerona Award for 2018. On behalf of Dr. RN Nagendraji, Dr. Balinarayan Phookan, Head of the Department of Yoga, Srimanta Sankardev University, Rupnagar, Guwahati, received the award.

The 13th Assam Yoga Mahotsava Celebrations Committee also gave away cash prizes to three hard-working Nirvan — the district yoga centres (out of 33 centres) namely Dhemaji (first prize Rs.5,100), Morigaon (second prize Rs.3,100) and Barpeta (third prize Rs.5,100) to encourage them to initiate awareness drives and popularise yogic science in the fringe localities of the State.

A large number of yoga practitioners, yoga teachers and students hailing from 33 districts of the State participated in various colourful yoga group competition in the day-long inaugural function. In the competition, Yoga Arogya Niketan led by Yogavid Rupjyoti Kar of Dhing, Morigaon won the first prize. Prastuti Yoga Centre, Doomanichauki, Darrang secured the second position while the Yoga Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiquoi College got the third prize.

The inaugural function was graced by a number of dignitaries like Dr Lakshmanan S, IAS, Director of National Health Mission, Government of Assam, Dharmakanta Mili, Director, ACS, Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, Government of Assam, Dr Rudramoni Dubey, Ex-Chairman, Pollution Control Board, Assam, Mrs. Anamika Choudhury, ACS, Deputy Secretary (Transport), Government of Assam, Yogacharya Subhasish, Founder-President, Indian Yoga Culture and Yoga Therapy Centre (IYC&YTC), Maligaon as well as Amar Krishna Paul, Journalist and Writer. Yogacharya Subhasish presided over the meeting.

Yogacharya Subhasish said that a blood donation camp will be organised on February 22 at Purbanchal Yoga Mahavidyalay, Maligaon and the closing ceremony of the 13th Assam Yoga Mahotsava will be held at Assam Banga Sarswat Math, Kokilaben, Jorhat on March 29.

Notably, the yoga professionals of the State are the first to celebrate Assam Yoga Mahotsava in the entire India. They have been celebrating Assam Yoga Mahotsava on December 12 since 2007. On the other hand, the country, in particular, and, the world, in general have been celebrating International Day of Yoga on June 21 since 2015. (PIB)
