Youth body stages protest, demands punishment to culprits

LAKHIMPUR, June 11: Along with the other parts of the State, protest against the savage lynching of two talented youths, Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das, at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong, continued in Lakhimpur. Vehemently condemning the brutal incident, the Lakhimpur district unit of Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Mancha (BAYM) staged two-hour long sit-in in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday and administered strong protest against it. The activists of the organization demanded capital punishment for the culprits. They stressed trial in a fast-track court.

In this regard, the organization submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal through the Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner after the end of the programme. Further, the organization demanded the government to initiate effective measures to prevent any kind of post-incident communal and vindictive conflict. It also demanded control on social media so that no rumour could be spread through social media which might cause law-and-order problem.

On the other hand, students and youths, members of various organizations and institutions and other citizens, lit earthen lamps in public places of the district on Sunday evening, praying for eternal peace of the departed souls and expressing condolence to the bereaved families of the two youths.
