GUWAHATI:

Ever since the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's (GMC) decision to relocate Garbage Dump from Boragaon to Chandrapur had been put in place, angry locals from Chandrapur had led series of protests against the decision.

Local population of Guwahati's Chandrapur have vehemently opposed and denounced the decision to relocate Guwahati's waste disposal site from Boragaon in West Guwahati to the newly designated site in the city's eastern outskirts. Residents are concerned that the relocation would have an impact on the area's biodiversity.

Scores of members from the Chandrapur Anchalik Chatra Santha (CACS) on Wednesday blocked the Homen Borgohain Path in Chandrapur to stop the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation) vehicles from dumping garbage at the newly shifted dumping ground in the area.

In reaction to the strong protest, the police used lathi-charge due to which a young protestor sustained injuries on his head.

A total of 21 GMC vehicles were stopped by the protestors who were raising slogans against the government's decision. The protestors requested the police officials to escort the vehicles back from the area.

"The police baton-charged the protestors during which two persons – Rupam Kalita (26) and Sankar Das (32) were injured. As many as 18 protestors were arrested and taken to the Noonmati Police Station. Later, hundreds of women from Chandrapur staged a protest in front of Pragjyotishpur Police Station demanding the release of the arrested persons," stated a protestor.

CACS president Nitul Kalita and general secretary Saurabh Das slammed the government for letting the police 'lathi charge' people who were democratically protesting. "We will continue to stage protests until the government rolls back its decision," said Kalita. The CACS underlined that it will stage a 'Satyagraha' on Thursday to oppose the government's decision.

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) began dumping rubbish in Chandrapur on June 28 in response to an Assam government directive issued on June 24 instructing Kamrup Metro district officials to stop dumping waste at the Boragaon site and instead utilise the alternate site at Chandrapur.
