Youth Trampled To Death by Wild Jumbo in Golaghat

NUMALIGARH: On Monday afternoon, one person was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Gobindpur Tea Estate of Morangi in Golaghat district. According to information received, the youth had gone to the tea estate to click pictures of the wild elephant roaming about in the tea garden. While he was taking pictures, the wild elephant chased him and killed him on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Manash Barua. Manash hailed from no. 5 Rongbong village of Morangi in Golaghat district. Locals said that Manash had gone to take pictures of the herd of wild elephants for some web page. On the other hand, the Morangi Press Club, while condoling the demise of Manash Barua under tragic circumstances, stated that he was not a designated journalist.

The human-elephant conflict has assumed an alarming proportion in the district of Golaghat. Each year, elephants wreak havoc in human settlements which cause severe casualties on either side. Meanwhile, multiple herds of wild jumbos have been seen dwelling in the human habitat areas of Numaligarh-Morangi area of Golaghat since the last couple of months. A week ago a herd of wild elephants vandalized the dwelling house of a resident of Thuramukh area under Juriadolong forest beat office.
