Guwahati: Taking a dig at the popular singer and filmmaker Zubeen Garg, former chief minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi said that the singing star is not fit to become the ambassador of the Assam agriculture sector. He further stated that the artist should not foray into the field of politics.

Raising doubts about Zubeen's appointment as the ambassador of the Agriculture sector of Assam, Gogoi predicted that Zubeen could potentially turn into a "saffron ambassador" instead of the ambassador of the state agriculture department.

The veteran Congressman also reacted to rumors of the BJP will nominating Zubeen Garg as a Rajya Sabha MP. His name was earlier being floated as a possible nominee to the Rajya Sabha by the Congress and AIUDF parties. The post eventually went to Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, a prominent journalist who had been extremely vocal in his opposition to the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

"Could he be accepted by all the people of Assam if turns into a saffron ambassador? Could I accept him?", Gogoi queried.

He added that Zubeen is not fit for the agricultural revolution. " Artist should remain as an artist. An artist should not venture into the field of politics," Gogoi further said.

He also cited the example of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, who was once elected to the Assam assembly. "I think artists should not come into the field of politics. What happened with Bhupen Hazarika?," Gogoi said.

It is to be noted that Zubeen has become the subject of controversy ever since Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora informed of his decision to appoint Zubeen as the brand ambassador of the agriculture sector in the state. On Thursday, the singing sensation was reportedly abused by unidentified miscreants in Guwahati city's Ganeshmandir area.

The singing sensation has now filed a complaint at the Dispur police station. As per Zubeen's FIR, a copy of which is available with The Sentinel Digital, he was headed towards his residence at 'Synergy Apartments' in the city from a studio at Zoo Road around 12:40 am on Thursday when a vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-BY-0675 overtook his vehicle near the Ganeshmandir area.

At least 6 people were traveling in the vehicle during curfew hours in the city, Zubeen stated. These people stepped out of their vehicle and proceeded to verbally abuse the musician. They made derogatory remarks against the star with beer bottles in hand.

"When I tried to defend they got aggressive and molested me with unparliamentary words", Zubeen wrote in his complaint. Zubeen Garg was accompanied by his personal bodyguard and 2 PSOs provided by the state government for his protection.
