The state Assam located in the Northeastern region of India is known widely for various reasons mainly for its widespread bio-diversity, tea plantations, ancient culture, wildlife and archaeology. Availability of the Indian One-horned Rhinoceros makes Assam a place a most visit tourists destination from all over the world. Rich mineral resources, huge water bodies with varieties of fish species and petroleum production are other important characteristics of the state Assam. Assam has abundant of plants and herbs that are used for medical purposes in curing diseases.

The state holds large groups of various ethnic communities but the official language of the state is Assamese. Tourism in Assam provides soothing essence of nature along with spiritual values in the places of pilgrimage which brings calmness and peace loved by many. The history of Assam is something very interesting which is possible to understand in deep only after exploring the historical aspects of the state.

Assam is in between the northeastern states of Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland and shares a border with Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan along the Eastern and Northern boundaries. On its west is Bangladesh lying in the Southwestern area.

The tourism industry has become a growing service sector in the country that adds upto 6.23 percentage to the nationwide GDP. Assam is the state at the middle of the world's richest bio-geographic areas which is accurately favoured with natural resources and hence appreciated for the chance for growth and development among the enthralling force if tourism is persuaded as a flourishing industry. Gradually Assam has become the hub of tourists' destination as loaded with rich cultural heritage, ethnic values and economic resources. The present Tourism Minister of Assam is Shri Chandan Brahma and the director of Assam tourism is Shri Bimal Bora. Famous actress Priyanka Chopra in year 2016 signed the accord for becoming the Brand Ambassador of Assam Tourism.

Tourism has now become the fastest-growing market in the state of Assam. Various schemes and plans were led by the authorities of the state giving provisions in enhancing the infrastructure and boosting the natural as well as wildlife resources. The State Tourism department with the financial help from the State Government has been much success in bringing progress with facilities.

Every year tourists from all over the world visit the place to get a view of 5 National Parks, 15 wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations and other attractions. Assam provides the adventure-loving tourist with a great journey with adventure in which they explore beautiful places including some of the idle places like Bradani, Deepor Beel, etc.

Majuli which is the largest river island in the country is situated in Assam with a land area of 1,250 sq km approximately. Assam is a place of historical importance because of the existence of ancient buildings such as Joysgar, Kareng Ghar, RangGhar, Joydol in Sivasagar and other places like Garhgaon, Sonitpur in Tezpur and Jerangapathar. The temples in the state also symbolize spiritual values along with architectural importance such as the Umananda, Kamakhya and Agnighra.

The traditions and culture of Assam also attract tourism as it is a place of production of various products including traditional crafting. Silk is products are mainly produced in the state as the Warm Eri, Muga and Pat.

The Assam Tourism Policy of 2008 under the State government of Assam sets the tourism matter as a priority in maintaining economic and financial development which motivates the public and private partnerships leading to the growth of tourism. The tourism of Assam has reached new heights as it has become the source of income for people in balancing the economy.
