BJP promises free rice and subsidized rates for pulses, sugar ahead of State Budget

GUWAHATI: Ahead of the upcoming State budget, the BJP led state government has announced various subsidies for the poor.

In a rally, State Finance, Health, and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the government will offer rice for free to the poor. Pulses and sugar will also be available at subsidized rates in the budget.

Under the government’s flagship scheme ‘Affordable Nutrition and Nourishment Assistance (ANNA) Yojna’ two crore people of the State are provided rice at Rs 1/kg.

Several other schemes that will benefit people will be announced in the budget, Sarma said.

The Minister also hit out at Congress and accused the part of playing vote bank politics by allowing illegal Bangladeshis to settle down at Kaziranga National Park.

"The BJP-led government freed the park from encroachment. Since then, the rampant killing of one-horned rhinos has drastically come down. During Congress' rule, there were up to 50 rhino poaching cases every year. Now, it is nil," the minister said, according to media reports.
