Attack on peaceful protesters condemned in Jiribam at Silchar

Silchar, Aug 1: Amra Bengali, a social organization, have once again stepped forward to lend its support for the Hindu Muslim Bengalis of Jiribam in Manipur who are facing a threat from the Manipur government. The government of Manipur has issued a circular that 1951 would be made the base year for preparation of NRC of Manipur. Besides, a bill, Manipur People’s Protection Bill, 2018, which was passed by the Assembly on July 25, seeks to ‘protect the identity of indigenous people of Manipur from the entry and influx of outsiders.

In this regard, protesters under the banner of ‘Joint Action Against the Base Year 1951 of Manipur People’s Bill 2018’ began a sit-in demonstration, peaceful and constitutional, in Jiribam district of Manipur. Bengali speaking people who are settled in Jiribam also took out a peaceful rally from Lalpani ground to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Jiribam. Prohibitory orders under the Section 144 of CrPC were also imposed in the district. In a statement of Mohammad Ali on July 27, chief spokesperson of Joint Action Against the Base Year 1951 of Manipur People’s Bill 2018, Amra Bengali and others came to know that 144 of CrPC has been clamped in the district of Jiribam to prohibit any sort of protest demonstration and rally however peaceful and democratic.

Amra Bengali, through a representation to Najma Akbarali Heptulla, Governor of Manipur, on Monday has urged upon her to cancel the Bill, lift Section 144 and stop harassing the innocent Hindu Muslim Bengalis. They have mentioned in the letter that police unleashed its wrath on a peaceful sit-in demonstration through lathi-charge in Lalpani Bazaar. Women, children and youths were also not spared. The order was carried out based on the instruction from Jiribam Superintendent of Police M Mubi Singh. It has been mentioned that Md. Fazil Ahmed, Gunodhar Das and Md. Taz Uddin and others as protesters took part in the rally and entered Sonapur village. This time also police resorted to lathi-charge and even released tear gas to scatter the participants of the rally. Though many were injured, it did not deter them from protesting. Amra Bengali has severely condemned such inhuman acts on the part of the police. The letter addressed to the Governor of Manipur has been signed by Bokul Chandra Roy, secretary, central committee of Amra Bengali.
