Hailakandi: At a time when the nation has upped the ante against single-use plastic, two students of 646 No.Khadimbari LP School in South Assam’s Hailakandi district have come up with a bioplastic bag made from banana peels.

The project won first position among the 65 numbers of science projects showcased by students of different government and private schools at the District Level National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) programme held at SS College auditorium here on Wednesday.

Fahia Begom and Injamur Rahman, Class V students of 646 No.Khadimbari LP School became the cynosure of all eyes as they came up with an innovative idea by making an eco-friendly bioplastic bag made from banana peels. “This eco-friendly bag made by young Fahia and Injamur under the focal theme ‘waste to health’ caught everyone’s attention. This biodegradable environment friendly bag can be a substitute to the banned single-use plastic bag,” said Inspector of Schools, Rajiv Kumar Jha.

Jha disclosed that the 10 school projects selected under different sub-themes at the district level would represent Hailakandi district in the 27th State Level NCSC 2019 to be held at Tinsukia in Upper Assam from November 1 to 4 this year.

Two other projects also drew approbation from the judges - one by Rafath Tanvir Barbhuiya from Spring Valley Central School on preparation of bio-plastic from rice starch and the other by Rimashree Nath from Prankrishna Girls’ Higher Secondary School on inessential peduncle (stalk of banana) as an alternative resource for textile industry.

Of the total 10 projects selected by judges from the Assam University, Silchar, seven are from government schools while only three are from private schools. “This is for the first time the government schools have dominated over the private schools in the District Level NCSC programme,” said Jha.
