Barak and its tributaries rising alarmingly

Silchar, June 14: Following heavy rains in the catchment areas of Barak and its tributaries, an alarming situation has arisen in the plains of this valley. Many low lying areas are inundated, taking in its toll a number of houses and standing crops. Many areas along river Dhaleswari and Katakhal in Hailakandi district have gone under water. National Highway 6 between Patharkandi and Nilambazar has been cut off, disrupting communication between this valley and Tripura. According to water resources department, Barak river has crossed red level of 19.83 metre to touch 20.43 metre and is rising alarmingly at 10 cm per hour.

Inland water transport department in a press release said all the 21 ferry services across the network of river in Barak Valley have been suspended until further notice. This is an indication of how the water level of all the rivers, major and minor, which include Barak, Jatinga, Madhura, Katakhal, Dhaleswari, Kushiara, Longai, Shingla and Surma among others are rising. Interestingly, the catchment areas of these rivers are spread over Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. According to the meteorological department, there is heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland. The forecast for the coming days is that there will be heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms across this valley.
