Hailakandi: In view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Hailakandi district administration has constituted several cells for smooth conduct of elections to HP(1) Karimganj SC constituency under which the three LACs of Hailakandi district falls. An order to this effect was issued by District Election Officer, Keerthi Jalli.

Jalli has directed the officer in-charge of each cell to submit specific plan action along with budget estimate. The District Election Officer, in the order, stated that the officer in-charge would be solely responsible for smooth management and proper functioning of the cell and would keep close liaison and coordination with other cells.

This time the administration has given added thrust to enrolling eligible voters and creating awareness among citizens to cast their vote by constituting the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Core Committee comprising the Circle Officer, the Election Officer, DIPRO and the District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.

Various programmes are being chalked out by the administration involving all stakeholders to create awareness among voters to enhance voting percentage as compared to previous year. “The administration is making all out efforts to promote greater participation in the electoral process at all levels be it in schools, colleges, special gram sabhas, booth level meetings, mahila samitees and other platforms,” said District Information and Public Relations Officer, Sabir Nishat.

Plans are on the anvil to put up hoardings on election education, interpersonal communication, conducting mass media sensitization programmes, street plays and holding painting, essay, drama, quiz, dance and other competitions among students. The Election Commission of India has taken SVEEP activities seriously and even deputed senior government officials as observers to focus on areas with low voters’ turn-out.
