Hailakandi: The Hailakandi district administration is wooing women voters in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections by distributing sanitary pads free of cost. Leading from the front, Deputy Commissioner cum District Election Officer, Keerthi Jalli launched a drive to distribute napkin pads free of cost to poor women to generate awareness about the importance of voting and on health and hygiene across the district.

“In a bid to appeal to all women to come out to vote and also break taboos surrounding a women’s menstrual cycle and overall women’s health, DC Keerthi Jalli along with Joint Director, Health distributed sanitary pads pasted with logo of April 18 general elections as a motivation for all women to come out and vote and also get them to use sanitary pads,” said District Media Expert, Monika Das.

A silent revolution is afoot, says District Information and Public Relations Officer, Sabir Nishat with the Election Commission of India taking some solid steps towards lowering the gender voter margin in 2019, targeting women at the grassroots in particular. These include a women’s-only voting centre in every constituency, door-to-door registration of women voters, contact programmes in schools and colleges and outreach through self-help groups and welfare networks like those of anganwadis and ASHA workers. “The vote is especially precious to women because we are entrenched in democracy by the principle, and legacy of, suffrage. It is today an inalienable right of every Indian woman, “ said Nishat.
