Himanta Biswa Sarma lashes out at leftist intellectuals

Special Correspondent

Silchar, June 9: During their hurricane one day trip to this town on Friday, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance and Heath Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed two meetings, one held to inaugurate a private hospital at Meherpur and another to launch a Bengali daily at Banga Bhawan. Along with them were Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Forest and Environment, Dilip Kumar Paul, MLA, and Kabindra Purkayastha, former Union Minister, among others. Apart from all the talks on NRC and the apprehension of people about their names being dropped from the final draft, assurance of protection by the state, health services and the vision of the state government to maintain cordial relations between Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, the most striking note was struck by Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the assembly at Banga Bhawan.

Sarma while wishing good luck to the Bengali daily Gati, in fact, a revival of the defunct newspaper, walked extra mile and spoke for ‘Indianness’ of syllabus and curriculum of studies from the primary level of education as well as the media industry. His offbeat observation created a lot of curiosity in the audience. He said there was a time when the leftists controlled the intellectuals of the country who being indoctrinated did not hesitate to distort the curriculum of schools and colleges as well as the history. This resulted in a sort of alienation from the main stream of social and cultural life of the country.

The rich and enlivening thoughts and ideas contained in Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas and the thought provoking ideology of Kautilya Chanakya came to be discarded. It has played havoc with our spirit of nationalism and patriotism, Sarma lamented. It is time for all right thinking people to go back ‘to our roots, rich tradition, heritage and culture’. Even on the issue of NRC and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Himanta Biswa Sarma did not spare to hit out at the leftist intellectuals. The hint was no doubt towards his bête noir Prof. Hiren Gohain whom he however did not name directly. Interestingly, as a part of the ‘mass contact programme’, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited the house of Prof. Hiren Gohain. Shiladitya Dey, Hojai MLA, within 24 hours of the CM’s visit commented the leftist would remain a leftist and would not change his mindset.

The leftist intellectual was so obsessed with Hindu Bengalis that every alternate day he comes out with fictitious and imaginary figures of Hindu Bengalis in different districts of the state, pointed out Sarma. Intriguingly enough, the said intellectual would not even for a time utter a single word about Bangladeshi Muslims. He used harsh words to say that it is leftists like him who have left no stone unturned to wipe out the ancient history and culture of the country and create their own version of history. He did not miss to hit out at Karl Marx, Lenin and Stalin whose very preaching are based on hatred and violence.

Himanta Biswa Sarma reminded the ideals of Vedas and Upanishads are based on humanism and human values. He was all praise for Hinduism and it is for this Hinduism that country is secular. The present generation owes it all to the secular rulers of the country. As it was the occasion to launch the daily Gati, he also had a cautionary note to the BJP leaders behind the management to maintain the tenets of free, fair and fearless journalism.
