Mass wedding organized by Lions Club of Silchar Central

Silchar: Lions Club of Silchar Central organized mass wedding for 25 Hindu couples under its project titled Ganabibaha at the premises of Normal School in Silchar on Sunday. They have been organizing this programme for the last 15 years.

The ceremonial mass wedding where the 25 couples tied the knot amid vedic hymns and other rituals is a signature project of the club. The ceremony began at 11 in the morning. Different social organizations and some individuals also offer either some items or financial help to the couples who are from financially weaker section of the society.

Lion Amarnath Khandelwal, project chairman, said the main objective behind organizing such ceremony is to extend help to the people belonging to financially weaker sections of the society. He expressed his gratitude to different organizations and individuals for extending their help and co-operation to make the event successful. He said that since its inception in the year 2004, 347 couples have been a part of this ceremony. Last year, 34 couples tied their knots at the mass wedding ceremony organized by the club.

MP Sushmita Dev, MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha, BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Dr Rajdeep Roy, chairman of Silchar Municipal Board Niharendra Narayan Thakur among other dignitaries came to bless the newlywed couples. Certificates and Rs.5000 were given to each and every couple. Four kunjas were decorated where 6 priests solemnized the holy rituals. Renowned artistes of Barak Valley kept the audiences spellbound. The programme also included sumptuous feast.
