Medical college in Karimganj under active consideration

Special Correspondent

Silchar: The establishment of a medical college in the district of Karimganj is under the active consideration of the State government of Assam as a part of its commitment to pay equal attention to the development of Barak Valley. In fact, the demand for a medical college in the district of Karimganj has been raised by people in general for a long time. The increasing population of the bordering district and the lack of an advanced centre of treatment for the ever increasing number of patients suffering from various diseases have at last come in for consideration by the Sarbananda Sonowal government. However, there has arisen a controversy about the location of the medical college to be built up on the pattern of Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

The people of most backward area of Sonbeel, the largest water land in the valley have been clamouring that the medical college should be set up near their area where abundant land is available. It has further run into controversy when the district administration of Karimganj submitted a proposal to the Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Settlement Branch, Dispur for approval of the allotment of land measuring 256 chhatak at Duhalia under Patharkandi revenue circle. Accordingly, the Joint Secretary of the Department conveyed to the Deputy Commissioner on January 1, 2019 the approval of the said plot of land. It also directed that the land records should be corrected accordingly after handing over possession of the land to the authority concerned.

It is relevant to mention here that another proposal was also placed before the meeting of the sub divisional land advisory committee Karimganj held on October 11, 2018 in which the report of the circle officer Ramkrishna Nagar for an area of 126 bighas of land at Churaligool under Ramkrishna Nagar revenue circle came up for discussion. But, the land advisory committee unanimously approved the land at Duhalia which was considered most suitable site for establishment of new medical college in Karimganj district. The State government also favoured the land at Duhalia. But, unless there is unanimity about the selection of the site among the people of Sonbeel, it might run into rough weather. It is also relevant to point out that the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal while addressing the January 4 election rally of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister, at Ramnagar spoke about the commitment of his government for a medical college in Karimganj district.
