Silchar, June 19: Here is the sad tale of a mother whose 32 year old daughter Mampi Nath who was admitted in Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in the morning of June 15, following severe pain in her intestine died at night of the same day mainly due to the negligence of attending doctors, nursing staff and ward boys. Alleging the gross negligence of duty by the medical staff, Lakshmi Saha said that it was not only the negligence but also wrong treatment which resulted in the tragedy of her daughter. As there was none in the medical college to attend to her grievances, she felt quite helpless. Finding no way out, Lakshmi Saha lodged written complaints with the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, District Legal Services Authority and Superintendent of Police for justice on Tuesday.

In another complaint to the Principal, Shilpi Rani Barman, SMCH, Panna Saha, the brother of the deceased narrated the entire incident and sought inquiry into it in order to mete out punishment to those responsible for the death of his sister. According to him, his sister was allotted bed No. 77 in the surgery ward. During the course of treatment, the condition of Mampi Nath showed a little improvement and she started talking with them. But, around 9.30 pm, her condition began to deteriorate.

Instead of attending to her, the doctor concerned, nurse and ward boy put them in a confused state of mind by their unbecoming behaviour which not only surprised but also shocked them. In fact, Mampi Nath succumbed to her death, virtually without any proper treatment. It was, according to him, a blatant case of neglect and indifference to a sinking patient. On being persistently asked about the condition of Mampi Nath, the doctor and the nurse failed to give them proper answer. He further alleged that the medical staff held out threats to them and used force to push them out. Worse still, keeping them in the dark, the dead body was taken to the morgue. He squarely blamed the attending doctor, nurses and ward boy for the death of his sister. So that other patients who come for treatment are not subjected to negligence, Panna Saha has demanded thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the sad death of his sister. He also brought the serious allegation against officer-in-charge of the nearby police station of Ghungoor who also used intimidating words against them to take away the dead body or face action from him. This is how the attending family members of a patient, even after his or her death, are treated in the portals of Silchar Medical College and Hospital. This is most inhuman and barbaric, pointed out Lakshmi Saha and Panna Saha.
